On route 18 in Burt NY on Haudenosaunee land, you’ll find Local Roots Farm, a NOFA NY Certified Organic establishment. Owned and operated by first generation farmers husband and wife team; Jerry & Kristi Winquist. We implement simple sustainable practices and basic organic farming methods where we are assisting in bringing new life to the soil. Local Roots is a devotedly loved space flowing with new energy that coexists with Mother Nature. Dedicating our energy to forming a reciprocal relationship and reconnecting to natural life and our roots is important to us; as we strive to persevere and protect Mother Nature. When we began gardening we had no idea how connected we would become to this land or the many lessons that nature, as well as countless organic farmers, had to teach us. We involve and teach our son Gordon of these lessons and stewarding of the Earth for the next generation to come. As we grow along with our son, we too are learning that healing the land means healing people through food and the the relationships we all share. We are all connected. We recognize the importance of growth, not just growing produce, if we truly wish to be the change we want to see in the world.
We value creating and maintaining a relationship with the plants we care for and the people we grow for. In a society more connected to technology than the Earth, we hope to encourage folks to get their hands dirty; plant a home garden, connect to their food, to know where their food comes from and know their farmer. Small farms working together to form community is a beautiful way to help eliminate greed and the harsh effects on society and nature. Perhaps this sense of community could weave and connect us back together and back to nature.
We honor and have a deep respect towards those who have come before us and bore the title “Farmer”. We have a passion for nature, the granola we bake, the produce we grow and the whole process in between. From seed to soil, root to sprout, stalk to fruit, to returning it back to earth as compost. We are proud and humbled to hold this curatorial duty; and we’re forever grateful to provide our friends, family, CSA members and community with nutritious organic produce grown and baked with nothing but our best, lots of love and a whole lot of hard work and motivation.
Keep up to date with us here & Sign up to stay in the loop about our harvests, special events & upcoming farmers market season!
