On route 18 in Burt NY you’ll find Local Roots Farm. Owned and operated entirely by husband and wife team; Jerry & Kristi Winquist. Keeping true to our original intent, we want to make our space better than how we first found it. One of the goals on our farm to do just that. By implementing simple sustainable practices and organic farming methods we are bringing life back to the soil. Where litter and trash once resided in a plot of brush, is now a farm booming with life and abundance. Bringing energy to the land was only part of the plan. We both grew up in the area and it’s important to us to persevere our home and it’s future. We involve and teach our son Gordon, these practices in gardening and stewarding of the Earth for the next generation to come.
We believe these sustainable and eco friendly practices coupled with creating and maintaining a relationship with the plants grown are the future of food cultivation. Small farms working together to form a community of like-minded people is a beautiful way to help eliminate greed and the harsh effects on nature from large-scale industrial farming. Perhaps clean and nutritious local agriculture grown in soil lush with microbial life could be the remedy to ailing health concerns, conventional consumerism and our roles in a globalized economy.
We have a passion for nature, the granola we bake, the produce we grow and the whole process in between. From seed to soil, root to sprout, stalk to fruit, to returning it back to earth as compost. We are proud and humbled to hold this curatorial duty; and we’re forever grateful to provide our friends, family, CSA members and community with nutritious organic produce grown and baked with nothing but our best, lots of love and a whole lot of hard work and motivation.
