About Us

On route 18 in Burt NY on Haudenosaunee land, stands Local Roots Farm; a small scale market garden farm practicing organic farming methods. Previously certified organic. Owned and operated by first generation farmers husband and wife team; Jerry & Kristi Winquist. We implement simple sustainable practices and basic organic farming methods where we are working with the soil and nature.

Local Roots is a devotedly loved space that coexists with Mother Nature. Dedicating our energy to forming a reciprocal relationship and reconnecting to natural life and protecting nature.

When we began gardening in 2016 we had no idea how connected we would become to this land or the many lessons that nature, as well as countless organic farmers, had to teach us. As we grow we are learning that healing the land means healing people through food and the the relationships we all share. We are all connected. We recognize the importance of growth, not just growing produce, if we truly wish to be the change we want to see in the world.

We value creating and maintaining a relationship with the plants we care for and the people we grow for. In a society more connected to technology than the Earth, we hope to encourage folks to get their hands in the soil and plant a home garden, connect to their food and to know their farmer, where their food is coming from and how it’s grown. 

We believe small farms working together not only builds community, but is a beautiful way strengthen our local economy and help eliminate the greed of capitalism and it’s harsh effects on society and nature. Perhaps this sense of community could weave and connect us back together and back to nature.

We honor and have a deep respect towards those who have come before us and bore the title “Farmer”. We are passionate about nature, the granola we bake, the produce we grow and the whole process in between. From seed to soil, root to sprout, stalk to fruit, to returning it back to earth as compost.

We are proud and humbled to hold this curatorial duty of stewarding the Earth. We are grateful to provide our community with our organically grown produce, our granola baked with nothing but our best, our small batch herbal salves and lots of love and a whole lot of hard work and motivation.
